When Food Feels Out of Control — Understanding Binge Eating

Binge eating can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and isolating. It’s not just about eating “too much”, it’s about a cycle of dieting and guilt. This pattern often develops as a way of coping with emotional stress, unmet needs, or the effects of physical or mental restriction.

In my work at The Nourish Club, I see so many people who blame themselves for binge eating, when in reality, their body is responding exactly as it’s designed to under pressure. Restriction, whether from dieting or subtle food rules or forgetting to eat, can trigger intense hunger and cravings…. the very things that trigger binge eating. Add in factors like emotional overwhelm, lack of food safety, or neurodivergence, and it’s easy to see how the cycle takes hold.

The good news? Recovery is possible.
By learning to eat regularly, creating food safety (yes, that means keeping all foods in the house), practising mindful eating, and using emotional regulation tools, you can rebuild trust with food and your body.
